From Underdog to Top Dog

Dysfunction.

It is everywhere.

You see it in families. In churches. In corporations. In government. In schools. In laws.

And anyone who dares to be different within these structures is bound to encounter resistance, ridicule, or resentment.

It takes an uncommon courage to break free. Sometimes it requires drastic measures, and not without conflict.

Think about some of the greatest spiritual leaders who have graced our planet.

They did not follow the crowds. Instead, they led them.

They saw the dysfunction of their times and they challenged it. They were willing to break ranks and shake up the status quo.

I always think of the biblical story of David and Goliath. David, a mere teen and shepherd boy, was sent to the battle lines by his father Jesse to bring back news of his brothers.

Instead of reporting the news, David made the news when he volunteered to fight the giant.

Armed with only a slingshot, a weapon he was skilled at using, and a pouch full of stones, David took down the seemingly invincible Philistine, setting his people free from tyranny.

When everyone else cowered in fear, David ran to the battle. He knew that action needed to be taken, despite the giant’s constant criticisms, discouraging insults, and fearful threats.

He went from underdog to top dog in an instant.

When we find ourselves in seemingly impossible situations, we need to remember the unique skills that Spirit has placed in our hands to use. There’s a reason why we were blessed with those skills in the first place. Because through them, through you, Spirit works its miracles.

There will be times when we will be called to step out of the crowd.

When you hear this call, as Jennifer James says, “[t]hen you must act. If you never hear it, perhaps nothing is lost. If you hear it and ignore it, your life is lost.”

It’s your call. What will you do?

Spiritwork:

It is a proven fact: when we help others, we help ourselves. The world is overwhelmed by oppression of ideas, feelings, and people. Sometimes we become our own oppressors.

Today is the day to speak out for what you believe in. Speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. Break ranks by making the world a freer, more humane place to live.

Examine your core beliefs. Harness their energy to make a difference in your community. Start a club, volunteer, become an activist, and let Spirit take your skills to the next level.

Blessings.

Carrying on with the dog theme 😀 Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the injustices I see in the world and have to distance myself emotionally because you think that just one person won’t make any difference. Thank you for the reminder that actually one person can make all the world of difference. I’m looking forward to being gently guided by Spirit for my next growth level. Maybe it’s time to take on Goliath! Thank you for another inspiring and empowering post.

      Andrea,
😀 Yeah, I guess I have dogs on the brain today! I know what you mean. Sometimes I get so frustrated by the injustices, and then I turn off the news and try to block myself from all of it at times so it doesn’t overwhelm me. A protective mechanism, I guess.
But when I feel the Spirit is calling me to something, I know if I don’t do it, then I’m missing out on helping others.
Spirit will definitely guide us when we receive the call…and in Spirit’s eyes, there is no such thing as Goliath, so when we approach it from that perspective, nothing it too big for us to handle.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
      Blessings.

    AMEN Penny!!!

    Beautifully written.

    A Truly “Powerful” post today!

Your message reminds me of the passage by Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild –

“Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt.

So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future.

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt to a life that will at first appear to you to be crazy.

But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.”

    Thank you!!
    Healthy Blessings,

    Gena 🙂

      Thank you, Gena!

Into the Wild is one of my favorite books! And that is a very apropos quote that you selected.

Too many people lead lives of quiet desperation and never do anything about it!

I have always been an adventurous spirit since I can remember because my adventures always made me feel connected to a higher power no matter where I was. I could never understand why people didn’t want to get out and travel or go on adventures.

Thank you so much for sharing.
      Blessings.

I love the part about the skills that we have and are called to use. You’re right God blessed us with those skills for a reason, and it’s not for us to judge those skills or try to determine where to use them. I think it’s for us to stay connected to God so that when He calls we will be able to answer the call. Thanks for such an empowering post. I love the story of David and Goliath. I loved how he didn’t focus on the giant just on defeating him. I love how he was so confident and self assured. All that time in the field I imagine he developed an intimate relationship with God without distractions. I also felt that he could relate because he was a shepherd also.

      D’TaRelle,

You make a good point about not judging the skills God has blessed us with. God endowed us with a gift and skill set meant only and specifically for us.

I am glad you found this post to be empowering. And may it give you the strength and courage to face any Goliaths that come your way in life. Like David, we can’t focus on the Goliath defeating us; we must center ourselves in God and do what we are called to do.

Thank you so much for stopping in and sharing your thoughts with me and with everyone else who visits.

      Blessings to you.

Great post! I remember going through my “activist” stage.

However, in the last 20 years, I’ve accomplished so much more in my Spiritual/Intention stage.

And yes, you will stand out. You may even place yourself in some sort of “harm” even if not physically.

But really, do what you are Guided to do from a high vibration and you will always be safe.

    GREAT POST!

    🙂

    Hi Kathy!
I think most of us go through that stage when we first start out in the path. Been there, done that…LOL. I know what you mean. It’s a starting place for those who are beginning to embrace their passions. Then eventually they find themselves evolving to higher planes. At least that has been my experience. But like you said, when we are Guided to do things from a higher vibration, we will be protected.

Thanks so much for sharing your insights!
    Blessings.

    Hi Penny,

Since I started writing for women in the stepmom role, I have hemmed and hawed. I have sat on the fence. I’ve taken my ball and gone home. I’ve abanded them all in the past. BUT I keep hearing the call. Around this time last year, I was eye ball deep in an audit at work and really struggling with the time committment, the emotional committment to being in service to this very special group of women. I was asked to review a book called “Full Cup Thirsty Spirit” and for whatever reason, the words truly spoke to the struggle inside my heart. I figured it out. And here I am. From underdog to Top Dog 🙂

    GREAT post!!

That is an AWESOME story, Peggy! I am so happy for you! The Universe certainly gave you a sign when it sent that book your way. Funny how those things happen.

Sometimes answering the call is easy, and at other times we struggle with it. And if we keep putting it off, the Universe will find a way because it needs us to fulfill its work.

Reminds me of Jonah. God needed him in Ninevah, but he literally jumped ship to escape his calling, and God said, “Okay, I’ll fix your butt,” and sent a giant fish to swallow him in his darkness to give him a time out for three days. And even after the fish vomited him out on the beach where he was supposed to be, he STILL struggled with his call, but he finally did what he was meant to do.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I appreciate you!
      Blessings.
